As Clinical Lead in Diabetes for the North-West Coast NHS England, he has transformed specialised services. He spends a weekly session mentoring other GP practices to discuss ways of enhancing diabetes services, implementing prevention programmes, creating templates, advising on treatment targets, and encouraging Structured Diabetes Education that enables quick goal-setting and measurable health benefits. See team for details. Dr. Rahul Thakur, who currently works three days week as GP partner at Pendle View Medical Practice in his role within the NHS, has a good trail of achievements. Apart from routine GP work, he serves as a trainer and supervisor to tFoundation Programme Doctors (newly qualified Resident Doctors). Amongst other achievements, he has also been Principal Investigator in COVID research and several other research projects within his practice. As a GP with Specialist interest in Diabetes of repute, he retains an impressive following and has been duly recognised.

Track Record

  • As a clinical lead in diabetes for his patch, he has clinically led the transformation of services. He has been instrumental in establishing a social media group for 200 GPs across the patch and kept them in loop on the remodelling process. (Reference- https://vimeo.com/199809600). For this, East Lancs CCG gave him a Transformation and Innovation Award in 2021. He also designed the templates for Enhanced Diabetes Service, now installed all across 54 practices in East Lancs. Earlier, in January 2016, he led the bids for transformation funds.
  • He has been in the steering group of Lancashire NDPP (https://youtu.be/_eFK1pUWHEQ & https://youtu.be/9IPfMg9tl7U) since its inception in 2015 and led the group clinically. This effort has ensured that his patch refers in the largest of numbers. He has addressed 200 delegates (GPs and Nurses) at a Quality Framework Meeting to widen the reach.
  • He liaises with various leads in diabetes, to engage more and more ICB (Integrated Care Board) in reducing variation in care, and jointly with EMIS Health, has helped create an app for Lancashire Foot Blueprint. Further, he has been part of test-bed for digital innovation in diabetes for North West Coast SCN and became the Clinical lead in Research & Digital Innovation for North West Coast SCN.
